Over the Edge
Toril is an incomplete world. For thousands of years it has been clear that the Mind behind its creation is seeking to unite the two ends of the world to form a spinning ring in the heavens.
As the world literally has edges which fall away into nothingness there is a continual deluge of water from its oceans into the expanse beyond. Impassable mountains guard the edges on land but the fierce currents at the waters edge have claimed the lives of uncountable foolhardy vessels throughout history. Its is known that in the depths of the oceans lie numerous portals to the elemental plane of water which continually replace the water lost over the sides of the world. The largest portals are constant, and violent, producing strong upward currents which cause foamy and treacherous stretches of ocean dozens of miles across. Intermediate portals seems to wax and wane seasonally, many of these portals have been studied and charted which allow for expedited sea travel given proper placement and timing of a voyage. The smallest portals open and close without any identifiable pattern. Though small in name these portals still maintain strength to speed passage of vessels, or in their absence quickly lower sea level near the worlds edge. Overall the oceans of Toril breed daring captains and even more audacious pirates. Traversing from one continent to another, let alone across the length of the world, is a challenge few can be said to have mastered.
